Why is Leo Messi underperforming at international level?

With Copa America tournament set to commence in Argentina, everybody is wondering whether los Albicelestes can finally play to their potential and win the coveted title after the 18-year drought.

Seeing that Brazil are undergoing a process of rebuilding the team, Argentina are tipped as favourites to win the trophy and everybody in the national team are aware of the opportunity that lies ahead.

Even though Sergio Batista's has got a star-studded side at his disposal, the odds are that Leo Messi will be expected to make the difference, which is hardly surprising when we take into account that the Barca forward is considered world's best player at the moment.

However, after Leo failed to impress at the last two major tournaments many people wonder whether he has what it takes to be a leader of this Argentina team.

There are several reasons why Messi has largely underperformed at international level and one of those is the fact that the national team have undergone major changes during the last few years and that every coach has brought some new ideas with him.

Just like his other teammates, Messi wasn't able to develop an understanding with other players and he is definitely not the only one to blame for the recent disappointments.

On the other hand, it looks as though Messi is playing under immense pressure in Argentina shirt and that he is eager to show everyone that he can step up the plate, but that often has a negative effect.

Instead of playing his usual game, the Barca forward often looks for the goal even when his teammates are in better position, which is something that we could see too often at the 2010 World Cup.

Argentina have a habit of underperforming at major tournaments and the pressure is too much even for a player of Messi's caliber. Nonetheless, everything would be much easier if los Albicelestes were to win the Copa America on home soil.
