AC Milan's combative midfielder Gennaro Gattuso is hoping he'll eventually be able to play football again as he battles a nerve problem affecting his left eye.
Gattuso hasn't played since colliding with teammate Alessandro Nesta during the Serie A opener Sept. 9. He has been advised by specialists to wait another two to six months before deciding whether to undergo surgery.
"It's going to take more than this to knock me down,'' he added.
One of the key members of the Italy squad that won the 2006 World Cup, Gattuso retired from the national team after the Azzurri were eliminated in the first round of last year's tournament in South Africa.
He has indicated he would like to coach the national team one day.
